CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Since Ira knew the way, Imogene and the boys followed behind to the city park. Unlike the park in Paradise Springs, the Paradise Hill park sat off to the side, not in the middle of town. It was long and narrow, stretching down one whole side of the town. There was a walking trail, bike path, and various pieces of playground equipment situated in a line like a children’s version of an obstacle course.

Mattie and Mahlon ran ahead, sliding down the first set of slides before going on to the monkey bars. They seemed content in their play, though every so often they cast suspicious looks in Ira’s direction.

He supposed they might have a few questions. First their mother started visiting Astrid and now, all the sudden, Ira seemed to be wherever they were. Not that either boy had said anything. At least not to him. Ira was fairly certain they never would. Yet they would still have questions. He would do his best to assure them that he would take care of them and their mamm.

They walked in silence, at least silence between the two of them. The park was teeming with people, children climbing on the playground equipment, dogs barking at one another, birds singing in the trees. Astrid was right. It was a beautiful day. He should be thankful for this time to get to know Imogene better. But she didn’t seem to be in a very talkative mood.

What did one say in a situation such as this? He supposed they could call this a date. What had he and Ruthann talked about when they were dating?

Even if he could remember, he wasn’t sure it would pertain. They’d been in their late teens at the time. About to click over to their twenties. They had talked about frivolous matters, he was certain. What they’d had for dinner, who was dating whom, and all that sort of stuff that took up the minds of the young people in their community.

Though he had told Vern that he wasn’t a senior, and he wasn’t, he still wasn’t part of the youth in their community.

Middle age. He really didn’t like that term, but what else could he call it? So what did middle-aged people talk about when they were on a date? He had no idea.

The twins climbed off the merry-go-round and sped after them. Instead of running along at the park side they came up on the asphalt trail where he and Imogene were strolling along. They got in front of them and stopped, facing them, arms akimbo.

“Is something wrong?” Imogene asked.

But they turned their attention to Ira. “We want Mamm to marry Jesse.”

Ira blinked at them, trying to assess their meaning.

“Boys,” Imogene started sternly, “you take that back immediately.”

“But it’s true,” one of them said.

Aside from the cuts on their foreheads that appeared to be a mirror of each other, they were completely identical. Ira wasn’t certain but he thought even their freckles were in the same place.

“True or not, that does not give you the right to be rude,” Imogene said.
